Justification for our Literacy Mastery programme

Our programme is particularly important in disadvantaged communities, where low literacy levels can significantly affect a child’s educational attainment, confidence, and future opportunities. By helping children develop reading skills in line with their chronological age, we enable them to access the mainstream curriculum more effectively and participate more fully in school life.

Strong literacy skills are closely linked to improved attendance, behaviour, attainment, and long-term outcomes, including progression into further education, training, and employment. Early intervention is especially important for children at risk of falling behind, as poor literacy is often associated with social exclusion and reduced life chances.

Through our work with children and families, we have seen how improved engagement with education can also contribute to better wellbeing, higher aspirations, and a reduced risk of involvement in antisocial behaviour, gang activity, or youth violence. National research continues to demonstrate links between low literacy, school exclusion, and offending rates. By addressing literacy barriers early, our project aims to create positive long-term outcomes for both young people and the wider community.
